How an MPC wallet works

A standard wallet signs with one private key. If someone copies that key, they control the funds. An MPC wallet removes that single point of failure by never creating the full key at all.

  • Key generation. Each party creates its own key share in a distributed process. The complete private key is never assembled, not even at setup.

  • Signing. When you request a transaction, the parties that hold shares each run their part of the computation. Together they produce one valid signature.

  • Verification. The blockchain sees a standard signature from a single address, the same as any other wallet.

Because the key never exists as one object, there is no single device or person to compromise. Your policy engine and approvals decide when the parties are allowed to sign.

Where MPC wallets are used

Banks, fintechs, and payment companies use MPC wallets wherever they move funds at volume and need clear control over who can approve what.

Stablecoin payments. Payment companies send and receive stablecoins for their customers across many chains, with every outflow checked against policy before it is signed.

Treasury management. Finance teams hold operating balances onchain and move funds between entities with multi-step approvals.

Wallet-as-a-Service. Fintechs create wallets for their own end customers through an API, with the same signing model behind every wallet.

MPC wallet vs multisig

Both models spread control across several parties. They do it in different places: MPC splits the key before anything reaches the chain, while multisig asks the chain to check several separate keys.

Where the key lives

Split into key shares that are never put together

Separate full private keys, one per signer

What the chain sees

One standard signature from one address

Several signatures, checked by a smart contract or script

Chain coverage

Any chain that uses the supported signature scheme

Depends on each chain's own multisig support

Changing signers

Shares are refreshed offchain, the address stays the same

Usually an onchain change, sometimes a new address

How Utila can help

Utila is built on non-custodial MPC, so no single party, including Utila, can move your funds on its own. Key shares are generated with Utila's proprietary DKLS23 MPC library, independently audited by Cure53.

Every transaction then passes through your transaction policy and admin quorum rules before it is signed, across 100+ blockchains. Contact our team to see it with your own workflows.
